Danny and Marley.

Danny Lee told me that you went to see him. He told me that you didn’t want to see me any more. That you told him I was frightening you. Is that true, Marley?

No response.

Was I frightening you?

No response.

Was I frightening you, Marley? Were my letters frightening you?

Marley Calm down.

Danny I was writing you letters. They were letters, that’s all.

Marley Calm down, Danny, people are starting to stare at you.

Danny Who is? Who’s starting to stare at me?

Marley There’s no need to shout. I’m sitting right here.

Danny If I was frightening you, then you could have told me yourself. You could have written to me. You could have come to see me. You didn’t need to leave me a poxy message. I’m not sixteen any more.

Marley –

Danny I never wanted to frighten you. It was never my intention to frighten you.

Marley All right.

Danny I had nobody else I knew I could write to.

Marley Fine.

Danny Don’t say that.

Marley What?

Danny Don’t just sit there with your face screwed up like that. It’s like you’re passing a note through a classroom.

Marley Danny, look, I’m glad you’re back. I’m glad you’re safe. I’m glad you didn’t get your head blown off. I hope you’re going to be OK.

Danny I am.

Marley But I don’t owe you anything. And if I ask you to leave me alone, through your brother, or through a letter, or through a text message or a note via our teacher, then I expect you to leave me alone.

Danny I’m gonna be more than all right. I’m gonna be great.

Marley ’Cause if you don’t –

Danny What?

Marley I’ll call the cops. I’ll go to court. I’ll get an order out on you, no danger.

Danny You what?

Marley I mean it, Danny.

A long pause. He stares at her. She has to break his stare.

Where you staying?

Danny Where am I . . . ?

Marley You heard me, where are you staying, Danny?

Danny What do you wanna know that for?

Marley You staying with your mum and dad?

Danny No. I’m not. I’m staying at Lee’s. What do you wanna know that for?

Marley So I can tell the cops if you ever contact me again.

Danny You’re lying.

Marley Try me.

Danny You must be.

A pause. Marley smiles.

Marley I saw your Lee a while back, as it goes. Having his driving lesson. Driving down the Heathway. He was driving at about twelve miles an hour. There was a big queue building up behind him.

Danny Don’t.

Marley Why did you come and see me when I asked you not to?

Danny Why do you think?

Marley I have no idea.

A very long pause.

I’m gonna finish my tea.

Danny Right.

Marley And then I’m gonna go home.

A very long pause. She drinks her tea.

Danny How is it?

Marley What?

Danny Your tea?

Marley It’s lovely.

Danny That’s good. Mine’s a bit tepid. Should have tasted the tea we had out there. It was horrible.

Marley I bet it was.

Danny It was powdered.

Marley Great!

Danny It tasted like concrete.

Marley Lovely.

Danny I really missed you.

Marley You said.

Danny Is this going to be the last time I ever see you? ’Cause if it is I don’t quite understand why.
